Beakful is out. You can play it right now at beakful.funpuffin.com on your phone or computer. It's free, there's nothing to install and you don't need an account. On an iPhone, add it to your home screen and it plays like an app.
If you play, please tell me what you think. There's a Feedback button right in the game. Too hard, too easy, a bug, a hat you want to see: I read every one.
Here's what I'm building next.
Every tenth level is going to be something different, and the first one is Lost in Labrador. A storm blows your puffin way off course, up the Labrador coast. There's no puffling to feed this time, because you're just trying to get home. You dive for krill and cod to keep yourself going, and you dodge sea ice, flocks of birds and gyrfalcons on the way.
Make it through and you earn a Labrador flag sweater: white, green and blue, with the black spruce sprig. I'm pretty proud of that one.
How does your score stack up? Soon you'll know. The leaderboard is opt-in. Pick a name and you're on it. There's no email and no password. There's a board for every level and every sea, plus an all-levels total. It shows the top 10, and your own place if you're further down. There's a name filter, and I can take down anything that gets past it.
This is the one I'm most excited about. One short run a day, the same for everyone. At midnight Newfoundland time the game picks a place, two foes and a twist. Some days it's a gold rush, some days a capelin roll with extra fish, some days fog rolls in, or it's a sand lance day, or your puffling is extra hungry. Play as many times as you like and your best score counts.
Every daily has its own leaderboard, and there's a weekly board that adds up your days and resets every Monday. Play on days in a row to keep a streak going. The daily opens once you've made it past Baccalieu Tickle.
A few ideas are still on the drawing board: a puffin island where your colony grows the more you play, sea glass to collect on the beach, weather that changes things up, and a season mode where you raise one puffling across many runs.
Thanks for playing, b'ys. Now go feed that puffling.
